Making The Card Front

If you’re new here, be sure to check out my original tutorial, Mini Sweethearts Valentine, where I walk you through creating the heart-shaped card bases step by step.

Mini Sweethearts Valentine

That post covers everything you need to know about making the card base and front. For this project, I followed the same tutorial with a few modifications:

  • I used the largest heart die from the Hero Arts Nesting Infinity Die Set.
  • For the lettering, I used the Vault Seasonal Sketch dies by Tim Holtz.
  • Instead of drawing a horizontal guideline, I taped a T-square to my cutting mat for alignment.
  • Rather than precisely taping each letter down, I eyeballed the letter spacing.

Tips for Perfect Letter Placement

  • Tape the heart to a cutting mat—the grid lines are your friend!
  • Start with the outside letters and work your way in for balanced spacing.
  • Use the T-square as a bottom guide to keep the letters straight.
  • Use reverse tweezers to hold each letter while applying glue.
  • A fine-tip glue bottle is a must for precise application.
  • Apply glue sparingly to prevent it from seeping out around the letters.

These small tweaks and tips will help you achieve a clean, polished look with minimal fuss!

If your cards are already prepped, let’s jump right in and start crafting these pun-tastic valentines!

Printing The Punny Sentiments

I created these punny sentiments specifically tailored to fit the Hero Arts heart die. Below is an example of how the sayings will look inside the heart shape when die cut.

Note: The PDF does not include a colored background. However, if you prefer a colored background for your valentine, you can easily achieve it by printing the PDF on light colored cardstock instead of white.

You can download the free punny sentiment PDF here.

Follow the printing instructions below:

  1. Print it out on white/light colored cardstock.
  2. Print on normal/best quality at 100%.
  3. DO NOT SCALE TO FIT PAGE.

Your printout should look like this.

Cutting the Punny Sentiments

  1. Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut the sentiments apart along the red dotted line.
  2. Grab the second largest heart die from the Hero Arts nesting infinity die set.
  3. Position the heart die upside down, aligning it with the sentiment at the center, and secure it in place using tape.

  4. Then, run it through your die cutting machine.
  5. Glue it to the inside top of your heart card base and set something heavy on it while it dries.
